Popular Mechanics did a pretty cool mash up of which car models are most bought by each state based on ratios of market share of said model compared to the other states .

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Being in Georgia I’m a bit disappointed... You can thank the Atlanta suburbs and GA tax incentives (although now expired) for this one:

Kinja'd!!!

What do you guys think about their results?

***THIS LIST IS NOT OF THE MOST REGISTERED CARS*** If you don’t feel like reading the article here is the rational:

If you were to take a list of the most popular cars in each state in the U.S., it’d be a pretty monotonous list. A bunch of Ford F-150s, some Chevy Silverado and Ram pickups, the odd Honda Accord or Toyota Camry here or there. ...

... “I compared the share for each model in, for instance, Alabama with the share of the same of model in the United States and came up with a ratio,” says Libby. “Then I basically ranked those ratios in within each state. It’s an interesting methodology—you’re basically able to compare the individual demand of a model in a state with the individual demand at the national level, and see what ways is each state unique from the nation.”

I can say that I couldn’t believe the number of Leaves in Atlanta. I have never see so many in one place.

I sort of like how the entire South is mostly foreign nameplates. Kind of goes against stereoytype, and accurately IMHO.

I never see Outlander Sport’s in PA. Although I am pretty close to Jersey. Maybe they are referring to the west side?

Are car sales that poor in NC that the five or six K900s that Kia has managed to sell made it the most popular car there?

In Pennsylvania, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has a market share three times its national market share, the only model that can make this claim.

Yeah, but that’s what, 9 outlanders?

It looks at the ratios of market share compared to other states. So basically compared to other states they have the most of them.

First two paragraphs from the article:

If you were to take a list of the most popular cars in each state in the U.S., it’d be a pretty monotonous list. A bunch of Ford F-150s, some Chevy Silverado and Ram pickups, the odd Honda Accord or Toyota Camry here or there.

But we were curious: What car was the most distinctive in each state? What model of car did, say, California buy far more often than any other state in the Union? We turned to auto analyst Tom Libby of IHS Automotive to help us crunch the numbers. First, Libby pulled data about the make and model of every car sold in the U.S., and calculated the popularity of each by percentage using registration data. Then, he did the same at the state level, and compared each state to the national average.

Atlanta is very different from the rest of the state though. Atlanta is a world center, many different cultures... now rural GA on the other hand. (even being from Savannah most people drive trucks/suvs, hardly any leaves)

I am very surprised with VT having an inordinate number of Volvo V60s. There are 2 dealers in the state, and they are always empty.

I would have guessed either WRX (seriously, it’s insane) or if you could narrow it down by color, a blue Prius. There are many Prii in VT, and every single one of them is the same color. I suspect the owners try to get in the wrong car at least twice a day.

doesnt necessarily mean theres lots of them, but relative to other states it has a market share 3x the national market share for that model.

There aren’t many states as bifurcated as GA where one large city dominates trends, politics, stats, etc. Here in AL, there’s more diversification among the four main cities and none is so relatively large as to skew everything. And I see about 5 Teslas for each Leaf, which probably speaks to opulence over practicality for electric cars.

/really can’t stand ATL, for what it’s worth

//only noticed Leaves from...sitting still in traffic

I think this was the result of extremely agressive EV credits in GA. Makes the Leaf one of the cheapest new car options once you take everything into account.

South Carolina: BMW 760; “In South Carolina, (where BMW has a large manufacturing plant) the BMW 760 sells almost ten times as well as it does nationally.”

That makes sense. See a lot of them, especially in the Upstate near the plant in Murderburg Spartanburg.

Florida: BMW 760; “Three Rolls Royce models, including the Phantom, Ghost and Wraith, all have market shares in Florida more than three times their national averages.”

That makes no sense. Why wouldn’t you make Florida’s unofficial car a Rolls Royce, since that’s the statistic you’re going to use, shitty online car data disseminater.

There are relatively a lot of Outlander Sport’s in the Pittsburgh area. I was surprised at how rare Mitsubishis and Suzukis were outside of the area when I moved away 3 years ago.

it’s pretty obvious that they just picked random cars. I like how several of the States have the same car too. like all of New England having the Volvo V60 Cross County. just plain lazy.

Maybe they were arbitrary for some, especially the Volvo one haha, but I can attest that the Nissan Leaf one for Georgia is accurate. Remember they used ratios relative to other states.
